"What do you want to be when you grow up?"

I used to imagine how cool it might be to have a 'Time Phone' you could use to call yourself up at some later age just to check out how things would work out over the next 20 or 30 years, maybe avoid a few grievous errors you might make along the way ( ~ Did make? Won't make now? ~ ), or just find out what it's like in ... THE FUTURE !  How would that work, exactly? Could you affect changes in the Timeline in both directions, making far-reaching changes in the future, or manipulate your own past?

If I were to activate such a device and call myself 40 years ago today, I would find a 4-year-old Tom standing up in the back seat of some old Buick with his chin and elbows propped up on the front seat, or just splayed bodily across the back window ledge. I am told that my earliest vocabulary followed the general theme of "Car car! Truck truck!" which had expanded by now to include a variety of dinosaurs and potentially dangerous scenarios involving them. I was enamored by dinosaurs (what little boy isn't?) and can still recall trying to understand then how rows of squiggly marks in my books could possibly convey any more information than the action-packed images clawing and scratching and fighting and biting across my favorite pages. I was going to be a Paleontologist, not an astronaut, not a fireman . . . none of those mundane professions. That is, until I learned that all the dinosaurs were long gone, that paleontology consisted of long arduous days scratching in the dirt searching for fossilized bones. Exciting to some, perhaps, not quite what I had in mind...

We moved to Hawaii shortly after this, where I learned to draw letters, thread them into words, and weave those into sentences which bore the awesome potential to literally convey the thoughts and emotions from one mind to another as if by magic — across any distance — any time span — any and all imaginable differences. Well THIS blew paleontology completely out of the water! Such a wondrous discipline promised a sprawling epic playground unmatched by any other. ~ I would become a Writer! So I set to drafting my very first story: "The Adventures of Dopey the Dinosaur" (complete with original artwork) — Write what you know, eh?

My childhood quickly evolved into pages filled with harrowing adventures and sci-fi stories, wild tales of fantasy, unconquerable monsters, harrowing escapes and, in spite of regular scholastic recognition for my compositions, a dawning revelation that I just might have to invest in more than typing skills and raw imagination to properly learn the Craft. All the books I read on the subject insisted that budding writers must do two things in order to learn how to write: (1) Read EVERYTHING, and (2) Never Stop Writing! For me that first point was simple . . the habit of always reading some book or other had become part of the daily fabric of my life by now. However, writing all the time would not come easily to a kid with only the roughest idea for a first novel fluttering at the edges of thought. I needed some reliable sources to draw upon, fountain-like, if Writing All The Time was to be expected. Junior High loomed on the horizon, hazed beyond by the incomprehensible mysteries of High School. Collectively, I had heard these called the most formative years of one's life. To 'learn how to write', then, I would simply write about what the coming years would reveal . . .

 "Watership Down"
 "Hitchhiker's Guide"

It is important to note that around this time, I read "Watership Down" (© 1972 · Richard Adams). To this day it ranks high among my Favorite Books of All Time for its singularly enchanting tone. It evokes a real sense of place as well as a truly mythological feeling of tangible 'otherness' which has yet to be matched by anything else I have read. Only J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" has come close. The effect Mr. Adams' story had on this fledgling young author cannot be overstated. I longed to capture even the merest wisp of his alchemy. I figured that such an ambitious goal would likely require years of narrative practice through journaling.

Another important book that fell as a gift into my life was Douglas Adams' original "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (yes, another 'Adams'—weird). Without apology, it demonstrated just how much FUN a contemporary novel could be. This would later prove to be quite a significant influence as the years rolled on . . . I had grown up feasting on virtually everything Arthur C. Clarke had ever produced, seasoned by literary classics and occasional forays into Fantasy. But here was something entirely new and refreshing: a cleverly written sci-fi/fantasy tale eschewing the choke-on-it silly punny-ness of Xanth (Piers Anthony), pre-dating Terry Pratchett's Discworld by years, offering a straightforward approach to humor that revolutionized (for me at least) how Writing could be leveraged in ways I had never considered. Sure, a host of other sources taught equally valid lessons along the way , but the significance of these two particular books still resonate with me to this day. Of course, everyone has a favorite book or two (or shelves of them), but back to the subject at hand —

I did produce some full-length manuscripts over the years, dozens of shorts stories and novellas, and (as one friend calls it) this 'Anthology of Life'. The goal of this particular web page is not to provide some exhaustive account of each journal —( get real )— but an index of sorts featuring brief descriptions of each, dates covered, my age(s), and a month/year graphic. I think of their summaries as sushi-like slices of life dissecting the history of a man from youth to middle-age. Not a few attempts to properly organize these things have been made over the years, resulting in sheets of loose-leaf paper with scratched-out references floating about in one journal trunk or another. Being a bit of a web designer, I finally decided to slap it all together in this malleable format more as a matter of convenience rather than some page intended for public consumption (a marginal byproduct). This way it is saved (in a manner of speaking) yet remains editable, providing access no matter when or where I may have cause to reference these dates / times / trends.

Beyond these practical aspects, a far more important legacy may be found in this overall effort. All of ~ this ~ mess ~ may outlive anything else I ever produce in my life as a writer. (there's irony) As much as I really view it as nothing so much as maintaining a creative discipline, just imagine how such a collection of heart-felt journals from this era might be viewed by subsequent generations? As I write this, I am nothing more than a struggling web developer with a penchant to write ridiculously long emails and the occasional blog post, but to my children, or their children('s children), just imagine the value they might find in these crazy spiral notebooks predating them by decades . . maybe even a hundred years or so! As preposterous as this sounds to me, quite a paradigm shift occurs when I imagine unearthing a trove of this magnitude as written by my own father . . or one of my forbearers from the early 1900's, or the 1800's . . even from the 1700's... Then the idea becomes nothing less than a fantastic realization of the time-skipping hopes that drew me into Writing in the first place! Imagine the value you might place on holding in your hands the very notebooks your progenitors leaned over with pen in hand, thoughts wrestling to find form on paper, all poured out for your eager eyes to behold...! When considered in that kind of light, all of this has the potential to become some deeply seriously cool stuff . . .

THE STATS:

Spanning some 33 years (ages 11-44)

                 1980s = 1-41  (48*)

                 1990s = 42-95  (54*)

      * individual notebooks (114 total)

4¾ yrs of that time undocumented in journal form but accounted for in letters, emails, and kid'tivity documentation (growth, and progress-tracking)

Living in our 'Solano' house (2nd mainland home after living in Hawaii) / about to start 7th grade in Phoenix, AZ (age 11) / Spectacular first entry:

Sunday, Today we went to church as usual. I've made a fantastic space station, and I've cut my middle finger halfway through last Thursday.

A year later –( the week Skylab fell )– we move 6 miles north to our 3rd Phoenix home; start my first job (PennySaver paper route); my older sister takes me on a whirlwind California trip to Disneyland, Sea World, etc.

To my best recollection, I spent this time (spanning the end of 8th grade through the summer of 1980) riding my blue Schwinn 10-speed with my best friends, Tom & Tim, to Metrocenter for summer movies, or saving quarters for the Gold Mine arcade which overlooked the old indoor ice skating rink ... or hitting Cookie Connection, or getting an orange julius in 'the Alley' or visiting Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour. Sometimes we took the city bus and transferred our way to Christown Mall for more arcades [Battle Zone! Asteroids! Moon Cresta!] and that crazy long escalator up to the second-level United Artist theaters . . . oh, and the best joke shop in Phoenix — remember 'Slime'?   :-)

The last two years in particular have been a good and healthy exercise for clarifying some direction and purpose in my life, a 'return to form' in a sense, collecting what shattered pieces of my heart & soul I could find and essentially fitting them into a new mosaic design. I suppose that's good. I may never animate anything of consequence . . and that's all right. I may never pen another book. That's OK, too. I will raise my children, and Go as God will guide — I mean to be faithful to Him, to His direction in my life, and just see where He may lead . . .

 Millennium Falcon

I never journaled in a "Millennium Falcon" notebook, or at the very least, a Star Destroyer — I should have, but I didn't. I still remember picking through the onslaught of original STAR WARS merchandise in the late 70's, deciding to save those epic notebooks for Truly Amazing Stories I would someday generate. So R2-D2 and C-3PO grace the cover of my first 'prelude' journal. In hindsight, their buddy relationship seems to strike the proper tone as these books have chronicled the dynamics of ever-changing relationships over the years, as opposed to Sprawling and Glorious Space Adventures. (If memory serves, my old Millennium Falcon spiral notebook ended up half-filled with some sci-fi story set in South America, entitled 'Ritual')

Covers have ranged from comic strip icons to eye-burning Lisa Frank designs, with dozens more sporting "original art work" (we'll call it), culminating in bindings reflecting a more refined perspective as the centuries changed. It seems appropriate that a pair of leather-bound notebooks conclude the whole series: one peppered by words, the other wrapped in music notation, each representing the two primary ways I serve in ministry. A youthful imagination filled with sci-fi and fantasy dramas gave way to a global, Real World perspective. I grew up. Yet it's not all that surprising how, with an ever-present fascination for the mechanics of systems (relational, communicative, programmatic) I would fall into a profession not unlike building LEGO projects all day as a Multimedia Developer specializing in motion graphics and user interactivity... all so methodical and systematic, mobile yet transitional — "cars and trucks" indeed.

My primary objective, the reason I embarked on this journey in the first place, was also realized in full: I learned how to write well enough. Funny how I once daydreamed of attending high school reunions as the consummate successful author. But as the years have rolled on, the one root theme woven throughout these pages (so noticeable while reviewing these journals en masse) is not the machete-hacked trail to building a career in publishing .. no, instead, it is God. Or put more accurately: my quest for God. (Mankind's search for God, Truth, and Meaning . . the most profound human conflict/story of them all) More than anything the world labels as "Success", more than Becoming a Writer, more than all my hopes, heartaches, and challenges, the singular fountainhead of inspiration filling most of my pages centers on Him, the realities He created/s, the form and control He shapes in and through human history - including my small portion.

A man's heart plans his course,
  but the LORD determines his steps.
—  Proverbs 16:9

Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
   and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
   and He will direct your paths.
—  Proverbs 3:5&6

Reviewing all of these years in detail, I am also struck by how remarkably unique are the myriad seasons of our lives. There was once a time when I, young and newly married, made a living just south of Canada, gaining skills in craftsmanship and management. Some years later, I had grown to become an award-winning computer trainer with an entirely different family, three kids, and living (of all places) in Viva Las Vegas. Some days found me leading friends on a leisurely morning bounding from Grasshopper Point in the heart of Oak Creek Canyon, a cooler full of junk food nearby, and our boombox ♫ of course. Other days found me preparing my next lesson plan aboard a cross-country flight for a nationwide e-commerce rollout, where I regularly met with corporate leaders prior to teaching their leading staff, all while managing a team of hand-picked instructors traveling to and from Vegas themselves. I have already lived so much, gaining a mixed measure of Life's rich experiences. I have written books, composed songs of wonder and love, explored forests, mountains, caves and shoals, have loved, lost, defended my family against assaults in court, and have experienced times of phenomenal support after enduring unthinkable betrayals. I have won in many profound ways and achieved triumphs I never could have dreamed of — all in the sight of God Almighty — all through this imperfect, floundering, hoping-to-become-good life. Only halfway done it seems (?) and yet I've surfed so many adventures and changes . . . It's a lot like "Forrest Gump" isn't it? .. just living this life, I mean, as if it unfolds into easily divisible chapters . . .

Some really nice notebooks still lay about my work studio, pristine relics from a time when collecting them meant New and Wondrous Pathways lay awaiting bold exploration! These are stacked on a desk now, untouched by pen.. brimming with a quiet and effervescent potential. I wonder if they may find some noble use someday, or languish in obscurity, ignored, until one day some kid (or grandkid) might find one, flip through pages littered with crossed-out home repair lists and sketchy relics from undated ambitions, and maybe scribble among them - or pull some out - who knows?  ~  For now, I · do · know what my calling is — Ah yes, but once I have raised my children, and this present season unfolds to the Next Big Chapter of Life (Lord willing), it's anybody's guess what Next Adventure awaits just over the horizon . . .

 2015
So five years have passed since creating this page. Not surprisingly, a few more notebooks are appearing at the bottom of this index. I really did abandon journaling five years ago, but 2013 brought a year-long devotional project that occasionally crossed into journal territory. That alone would not normally merit its inclusion here, but a 2014 trip to Hawaii with Ann brought the completion of another notebook filled just halfway back in 2005. The 'Tunnels Hike' account from this most recent trip spilled over into a whole new notebook, which I completed with ancillary topics back on the mainland. It struck me then how a couple of my later notebooks featured only ¼ or ⅓ of actual writing in them.  :-/  Journals with open-ended pages have always bothered me. (It's a Writer thing) I imagine distant descendants flipping through those and wondering why I did not complete them. I would ponder the same thing if chronicles penned by my great great great grandfather were diminished, it would seem, by a number of half-filled volumes. (I suppose this will make you Completists happy out there, or in the future, or whatever)  ~  So I will try to remember what happened a couple of years ago to fill in the gaps, drop the rest of these notebooks down here, and wire `em all up with Time Warp lynx . . .
